Our mission

Feel at home.

 A newcomer who speaks Dutch:

  • Has more self confidence
  • Can more easily ask for help
  • Communicates more easily with the employer
  • Better understands what is asked for at work
  • is more self reliant
  • more easily makes a chat with the neighbours
  • feels at home more quickly

We find it important that newcomers feel welcome in the Netherlands. We designed Spiekkleding to contribute to this feeling. A good understanding of Dutch opens many doors.

Clearly, good language education is important for learning a new language. Equally important is getting practice with speaking the language. Many newcomers feel inhibited when it comes to speaking Dutch. They worry about making mistakes. And it does not help that many locals switch to English when they notice their conversation partner is not quite fluent in Dutch.

Spiekkleding functions as a wearable reminder of how to say things. Users need not worry about not being able to remember how something is said. Key phrases can be looked up quickly if when necessary. Moreover, Spiekkleding expresses that the user would like to learn Dutch and can be seen as an outreach to start a conversation.

Our mission is to make newcomers feel at home in the Netherlands more quickly by providing language support and stimulating social contact between newcomers and Dutch people.

Sustainable production, fair labor conditions

At Spiekkleding we find it highly important that our clothing is made under fair labor conditions. Spiekkleding is therefore produced locally, in the Netherlands. The scarves are currently printed by House of U in Best and stitched together by the Fashion Tech Farm in Eindhoven. The sweaters are produced by silk screen printing company Twee Jongens in Amsterdam and stitched together by social workspace Atelier Jungles in The Hague.

In terms of materials we choose environmentally friendly fabrics and inks. Sustainability, quality and comfort top the agenda. Our scarves are made from 100% Ecovero, an extremely soft textile made from sustainable wood and wood pulp. Ecovero is a more sustainable variant of viscose. Our sweaters are made of organic cotton. This fabric is also very soft, of high quality and highly comfortable to wear.

Sustainability is not just about environmentally friendly production but also about preventing unnecessary production. For this reason most of our production is on demand: we do not start production until we have a client. In addition we encourage re-use of Spiekkleding. One way we do this is through a text on our brand label which encourages to pass on the garment to another newcomer who could benefit from Spiekkleding.

We aim for continuous improvement of our production process. Should you have a question or a suggestion, please do not hesitate to contact us.
